Hey neighbors! We're trying a brand new way to email and stay connected - if you see "Ghost" on this newsletter, it's supposed to be there! Our newsletters might look different or seem like they're coming from a new place, but we are in the middle of our migration now. Let us know how we're doing by emailing us at communications@andersonmillna.org!
National Night Out: Building Safer, Friendlier Neighborhoods
This year, our neighborhood will join millions of others across the country in celebrating National Night Out (NNO) — a tradition that began in 1984 when the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) launched the idea of neighbors coming together to make their communities safer.
Over the years, NNO has grown into a truly nationwide event. In 2024, more than 17,000 communities across all 50 states, U.S. territories, and military bases hosted NNO gatherings, bringing together 38 million neighbors. And here’s a point of pride — Texas is the only state that celebrates in October (all other states hold it in August) and last year, Texas won the NNO State Cup!
What is National Night Out?
At its heart, NNO is about community connection and safety awareness. The mission is simple: bring neighbors, local organizations, law enforcement and first responders together in a positive setting to build relationships, share safety information, and strengthen the bonds that make neighborhoods great.
Popular NNO Activities
There’s no “one right way” to host NNO — it’s about what works best for your neighborhood. Across the country, communities celebrate with:
- Block parties and front porch “lights on” vigils
- Potluck meals, cookouts, and ice cream socials
- Parades and flashlight walks
- Safety fairs and poster contests
Some neighborhoods even participate in NATW’s Dog Walker Watch program — turning everyday dog walks into a way to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
Why Participate?
- Meet your neighbors in a relaxed, friendly environment
- Build trust with local law enforcement
- Share safety tips and neighborhood updates
- Strengthen community spirit — the more connected we are, the safer we are
